Use Microsoft Defender, Spybot and Ad-aware to keep your computer free of spyware and adware. Make sure you have the latest version of each program, and regularly update their definition files and scan with them.

Microsoft supplies an excellent product called Defender, which provides spyware protection program free to any Windows user who wants to download and install it. Defender offers continuous background monitoring for spyware and adware as well as the ability to scan your computer for malware. The scan can be scheduled to take place when you are not using your computer. Two of the other leading antispyware tools are Ad-Aware 2007
Personal and Spybot S&D 1.4, and both are free downloads. These tools can be used to scan periodically to pick up spyware and adware that Defender misses. As a practical matter, the question of which one is best is moot. Scan with any one of them, ant the others are likely to find additional spyware and adware, so use all three. There is also a paid version of Ad-Aware, Ad-Aware Professional, which offers background monitoring as well as to add additional functions.
