How to Download Stinger and Scan for Problem Viruses

Stinger program icon

Stinger is a specialized virus scanning application produced by McAffee which deals with for 50-60 viruses that normal antivirus programs cannot remove. It can be download free of charge. Stinger is normally run when an antivirus program reports finding a virus that cannot be removed, but may also be run proactively when malware has compromised the normal functioning of the computer, and a virus infection is regarded as a possibility.

Stinger is re-released frequently as made necessary by the appearance of new viruses or variants, so do not keep it after use for use later, but rather re-download it each time you need it.

  1. If you do not have a current version of Stinger, go to http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/, and under "How do I use Stinger?" click Download v2.6.0. and in the Save As dialog elect to save stng260.exe in Desktop. (The name may vary, make of the name of the file you downloaded for future reference.)

  2. Double-click the downloaded Stinger file, either on you Desktop, or in the folder it was downloaded to. Stinger will open By default it will scan the C:\ drive. Modify this as necessary using the Add, Browse and Remove buttons.

  3. Click Scan Now to start scanning. Note the names of any virus found. You will have to keep track of the number of different viruses found by stinger in addition to the number of different viruses found by any other virus scanner used in conjunction with Stinger. See warning concerning multiple computer viruses being detected

  4. When Stinger is through scanning you can save a report to disk. Click File, then select Save report to file.

Scan with Stinger to remove viruses other antivirus programs may not be able to remove.
