How to Download Stinger for Use on Another Computer

Stinger program icon

Stinger is a specialized virus scanning application produced by McAffee which deals with for 50-60 viruses that normal antivirus programs cannot remove. It can be download free of charge.

With malware scanning software in general, if you wish to scan a computer that has no networking capability for viruses, worms, spyware or adware, it will be necessary to download the necessary scanning software using a computer with Internet browsing capability, and transfer this software to the infected computer by means of removable media such as a CD-R, external drive, memory stick, or an LS-120 drive. Note that diskettes normally too little capacity for this purpose. You must use a medium that is compatible both with the computer you will be using to download the software and the infected computer.

Use a medium that the infected computer is able to read in safe mode.  Note that viruses, spyware and adware have been known to adversely affect the functionality of CD-ROM and external drives, so test in advance to assure that the medium you are planning to use will in fact be readable on the infected computer in safe mode.

If you will be burning the files to CD, first create a folder on the Desktop to download the files to, and when finished downloading burn this folder to CD. If you are using an external drive, you can download directly to the external drive. Create a folder on this drive to download the files to before proceeding.

Stinger does not have an installer. The file you download is the program itself. The file has been named to keep viruses from detecting it. New versions of Stinger are issued frequently to keep up with new viruses. It does not require definition files. Therefore do not keep Singer after you have used it for possible later use. Redownload it each time you need it. Note that Stinger, unlike most scanning software is small enough to fit on a diskette if necessary.

To download the Stinger executable.file for use on a computer without Internet connectivity, use a computer with Internet connectivity to download and save the files as follows.

  1. Browse to http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/ to download Stinger. Just below How do I use Stinger, near the top of the page, click Download v2.6.0 and select Save on the File Download message box.
  2. In the Save As dialog select the folder you have prepared for downloading. Note the name of the file, as it is changed from time to time.

You now have the Stinger executable you need to scan for viruses on a computer that does not have network connectivity. If you will be using a CD to transfer the files, first download any other software you are planning to use, and then burn the download folder to a blank CD.
