How to Download Stinger for Use on Another Computer

CWShredder program icon

CWShredder is a specialized spyware scanning application which scans for and removes variants of CoolWebSearch, historically one of the most obnoxious and difficult to remove examples of verminware. It can be download free of charge from InterMute, now a part of Trend Micro. Run it anytime another scanning program detects anything related to CoolWebSearch.

With malware scanning software in general, if you wish to scan a computer that has no networking capability for viruses, worms, spyware or adware, it will be necessary to download the necessary scanning software using a computer with Internet browsing capability, and transfer this software to the infected computer by means of removable media such as a CD-R, external drive, memory stick, or an LS-120 drive. CWShredder, unlike most scanning software is small enough to fit on a diskette if necessary, but if you are are also planning to scan with other products at the same time you may as well save CWShredder to the same medium as the others.

Use a medium that the infected computer is able to read in safe mode.  Note that viruses, spyware and adware have been known to adversely affect the functionality of CD-ROM and external drives, so test in advance to assure that the medium you are planning to use will in fact be readable on the infected computer in safe mode.

If you will be burning the files to CD, first create a folder on the Desktop to download the files to, and when finished downloading burn this folder to CD. If you are using an external drive, you can download directly to the external drive. Create a folder on this drive to download the files to before proceeding.

CWShredder does not have an installer. The file you download is the program itself. New versions of CWShredder are issued frequently to keep up with new releases of CoolWebSearch variants. It does not require definition files. Therefore do not keep CWShredder after you have used it for possible later use. Re-download it each time you need it.

To download the CWShredder executable file for use on a computer without Internet connectivity, use a computer with Internet connectivity to download and save the file as follows.

  1. Browse to http://www.intermute.com/spysubtract/cwshredder_download.html to download CWShredder. Click stand-alone version of CWShredder and select Save in the File Download message box.
  2. In the Save As dialog select the folder you have prepared for downloading. The name of the file will be cwshredder.exe.

You now have the CWShredder executable you need to scan for CoolWebSearch variants on a computer that does not have network connectivity. If you will be using a CD to transfer the files, first download any other software you are planning to use, and when you have it all burn the download folder to a blank CD.
