Ad-Aware SE icon

d-aware 2007 is a leading product which you can use to scan for and remove spyware and adware from your computer. It can be downloaded from the Internet free of charge. Ad-aware uses definition files to recognize the malware it is searching for, and it is important that you have the latest version of these files when scanning with Ad-Aware. These definition files are separate from the executable file. These definition files are separate from the executable file. When the computer on which Ad-Aware is being run has Internet connectivity, Ad-Aware can perform a Web update. When there is no Internet connectivity, the user must download and install these definition files manually.

With malware scanning software in general, if you wish to scan a computer that has no networking capability for viruses, worms, spyware or adware, it will be necessary to download the necessary scanning software using a computer with Internet browsing capability, and transfer this software to the infected computer by means of removable media such as a CD-R, external drive, memory stick, Zip disk or an LS-120 disk. Note that diskettes normally too little capacity for this purpose. You must use a medium that is compatible both with the computer you will be using to download the software and the infected computer.

Use a medium that the infected computer is able to read in safe mode.  Note that viruses, spyware and adware have been known to adversely affect the functionality of CD-ROM and external drives, so test in advance to assure that the medium you are planning to use will in fact be readable on the infected computer in safe mode.

To scan for spyware with Ad-Aware 2007 you will need to install the Ad-Aware program by downloading the installer and running it to install Ad-Aware. Ad-Aware requires definition files to be able to find spyware, and normally updates these files over the Internet. When scanning on a computer with no Internet connectivity, Ad-Aware cannot update these files. In order for Ad-Aware to perform properly, it is imperative that you download these definition files separately and install them manually. If you fail to do so, Ad-aware will not be able to remove spyware from your computer.

To download the files you need to install Ad-Aware on a computer without Internet connectivity, use a computer with Internet connectivity to download and save the files as follows.

  1. Browse to http://lavasoft.com/. You will see a section labeled "View products for:." Select Home, then Ad-Aware 2007 Free (Free Download), then Download and you will be directed to a c/net server. Click Download Now, being careful to get the right button. The button you want is under "Welcome Ad-Aware 2007 users."
  2. Save the file aaw2007.exe to your Desktop.
  3. Now get the definition files. Return to http://lavasoft.com/. Select Security Center, then in the drop-down menu Definition File Updates. On the right side of the page there is a green "Download Current Definition File" button. Make a note of the definition file version (i.e 00nn.0000) and date. Click the button and save defs.zip to your Desktop.
  4. The downloaded file defs.zip contains a file named defs.ref. Save this file and the file aaw2007.exe from step 1 above to a medium that can be read on the destination computer. You now have the files necessary to install and update Ad-Aware 2007 on a computer that does not have network connectivity. If you will be using a CD to transfer the files, first download any other software you are planning to use, and then burn the files to a blank CD.

You now have the files necessary to install and update and scan with Ad-Aware 2007 on a computer that does not have network connectivity.
